Undergraduate Transfer Students Information

Agricultural Business Management (ABM) Major
Environmental Economics, Policy, and Management (EEPM) Major

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Oregon State University has a significant number of transfer students. For students who carefully plan their academic program before transferring to OSU, the transition is quite smooth and few if any problems arise. Here are some guidelines for you to follow in your planning.

Baccalaureate Core

You may fulfill the baccalaureate core in one of several ways as a transfer student.

  1. Complete the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) two year degree program at an Oregon Community College. This is a specific agreement with OSU and the Community College. Students with an AAOT degree have met all baccalaureate core requirements for Oregon State University with the exception of the two upper division synthesis courses and the upper division Writing Intensive course. If you are attending a community college in Oregon, the counselors at your institution can tell you the requirements for this option.
  2. Take specific courses which will fulfill the baccalaureate core requirements at OSU. In general, any course which has an identical title to a course offered at OSU and is for basically the same number of credits will count the same as the OSU course in terms of the baccalaureate core (e.g.: History of the United States). Other courses with similar titles may count. Check with your counselor at your school and ask if they have a list of courses that will count for the OSU baccalaureate core. If such a list does not exist, then check with OSU Admissions Office ((541) 737-4411)and with the Head Undergraduate Advisor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics ((541) 737-1399). The advisor can tell you what that course would be counted as if it were transferred into OSU. Checking with admissions and the department will prevent problems when you transfer to OSU.

Majors in ABM and EEPM

Beyond the baccalaureate core, students are advised to complete courses in the following areas:

Computers Course (AG 111 or CS 101)

If you are not comfortable working with spreadsheets, word processing, and data base programs, take course work to gain these skills.

Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting (BA 211 and 213)

Note: If the one term accounting course is not offered at your school, you may want to leave this requirement until you come to OSU, although some students with no accounting background find it beneficial to take a term of the full year sequence as a background course before taking the accounting course at OSU.

Legal Environment of Business (BA 233)

Required for ABM majors.

Introduction to Environmental Economics & Policy & Special Topics (AREC 250/299) or Introduction to Microeconomics (ECON 201)

Introduction to Macroeconomics (ECON 202)

These two courses are required for all of our majors. It is recommended that students take these after completing College Algebra.

English Composition (WR 121)

Baccalaureate Core WR I requirement

Writing in Business (WR 214) or English Composition (WR 222)

Recommended for WR II requirement

Communication or Argumentative Speaking (COMM 111 or COMM 114)

Required for majors, also can fulfill WR III

English Composition (WR 323) or Technical Writing (WR 327)

Required for majors, also can fulfill WR II or WR III

College Algebra (MTH 111)

Required for all of our majors

Calculus for Management and Science (MTH 241)

Required for all of our majors, or may take Differential Calculus
Note: Start at the level of math recommended by a math placement test. Be aware that although Contemporary Mathematics will fulfill the baccalaureate core math requirement, it will not help you prepare for College Algebra. It is recommended that you use MTH 111 to fulfill the baccalaureate core.

Science Requirement

The baccalaureate core requires 3 terms of science, and each term must have a lab. ABM students must include at least one term of chemistry. (Note that at OSU the first term of basic chemistry does not have a lab, and therefore does not count toward the science requirement for the baccalaureate core. If chemistry at your institution has a lab it will count for the baccalaureate core.

Consider other course work you are interested in taking in choosing your science courses. For ABM students a minor is required. Based on your choice of a minor, here are recommendations for science courses:

General Ag minor

1 year biology, 2 terms chemistry gives the greatest flexibility in choices of courses in the minor.

Animal Science minor

1 year biological science and 1 term chemistry recommended

Crop Science minor

1 year biological science and 2 terms chemistry

Fish and Wildlife minor

1 year biological science

Food Science and Technology minor

1 year chemistry and 1 term microbiology

Horticulture minor

1 year biological science

Rangeland Resources minor

no specific requirements, suggest taking 2 term biology and 1 term physical science for the baccalaureate core

Soil Science

1 year chemistry required

Grade Requirements

For all of our majors, there are specific courses where students are required to earn a grade of C- or better for the course to count toward their major. These courses are:

  • AREC 211 Management in Agriculture
  • AREC 221 Marketing in Agriculture
  • AREC 300 Applied Economic Analysis
  • BA 211 Financial Accounting
  • BA 213 Managerial Accounting
  • AREC 250 Intro. to Env. Econ. & Policy or ECON 201 Principles of Microeconomics
  • ECON 202 Principles of Macroeconomics
  • MTH 111 College Algebra
  • MTH 241 Calculus for Management and Science
  • ST 351 Statistics
  • WR 121 English Composition
  • WR 323 English Composition or WR 327 Technical Writing

Priorities

  • Complete your math requirements
  • Complete both courses in economic principles
  • Complete science courses appropriate for your planned minor
  • Complete basic writing courses
  • Gain basic computer proficiency
  • Complete as much of the Baccalaureate core as possible
  • For ABM students, complete the requirements for Accounting and
        Business Law.

Students who transfer in after one year at another institution are encouraged to work on the requirements in math, take 1-2 terms of the writing requirements, and gain computer proficiency. Fill in the remaining credits with science courses and other baccalaureate core courses.

Many transfer students hope to complete their undergraduate degree with two years of study at OSU. If you complete the requirements in math, economics, computer proficiency, science, and most of the baccalaureate core, then this is a realistic expectation.
