AREc MISSION
The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Oregon State University supports the University's and the College of Agricultural Sciences' missions through its commitment to providing economic scholarship and education for students and citizens throughout the state and to helping solve problems related to sustainable agricultural and food systems, rural communities, environmental and natural resource policy and management, and international development and trade. The Department addresses its mission through its undergraduate and graduate academic programs, scholarly research and agricultural experiment station projects, and Extension and public outreach programs.
AREc GOALS
- To educate undergraduate and graduate students, through frontier science and empirical methods, to develop their full potential in agricultural and resource/environmental economics, to develop critical thinking skills, and to provide a basis for lifelong learning.
- To proactively work to improve, through innovative, high quality education, extension and public outreach programs, society's capacity and knowledge base to identify and resolve economic issues related to key agricultural and natural resource systems, food systems, environmental policies, and rural development facing Oregon and the nation.
- To provide high quality basic and applied research focused on key agricultural, resource and environmental issues, and to be a leader in economic research to address effective policies regarding agricultural products, food systems, and international trade; environment and resource systems, including marine resources and energy; and rural development and sustainability.
- To be recognized internationally as a top tier applied economics graduate program with a strong emphasis on natural resource and environmental economics and trade and development.
- To enhance the Department's professional capacity to deliver high quality economic scholarship and education though continuing self-improvement programs.
