Ag Cooperatives Tour
The AREC 372 Agricultural Cooperatives class enjoying the traditional Ag Cooperatives Tour. The AREC 372 course is designed to provide a primer on agricultural cooperatives including such topics as principles of membership and business control, management perspectives, and relationships and linkages between cooperatives.
During the tour students visited Farm Credit Services, Norpac Foods Repack Plant and the Ag Cooperative Council of Oregon Office in Salem. During lunch at the ACCO office, speakers from the Oregon Rural Electric Cooperative and Oregon Telecommunications Cooperative Associations explained their roles. After lunch it was on to the Farmers Cooperative Creamery and Wilco Farmers Retail Store in McMinnville, the Wilco Farmers Agronomy Plant in Whiteson and then the final visit at Eola Hills Wine Cellars in Rickreall.
At each stop, company spokespersons pointed out that agricultural cooperatives have a long and successful history and are doing economically well in today's economy. Students were encouraged to consider careers in agricultural cooperatives.
ACCO provides support to OSU's ag personnel and ag cooperatives classes and sponsored the tour.
